Description
On Sunday 26 June 2022, the opening of the ‘Power project Suriname electricity system upgrade and expansion’, the so-called Solar Farm, took place in Clarapolder in the Nickerie district. This is named after the recently deceased manager of the N.V. EBS Nickerie, Mr. Brian Overeem.
The official inauguration was done by Surinamese President Santokhi. The head of state indicated that electricity and water are seen as very important utilities for the community, which is why the government is doing everything it can to make this project accessible.
President Santokhi indicated that this project is being carried out by an agreement concluded between the Surinamese government and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). This project will ensure social and economic development of Suriname, by providing a reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity supply.
On average, the solar plant produces 10,000 kWh per day. Based on this, 400-500 households can be supplied with electricity. This should further lead to electricity rates remaining affordable. This plant will be connected directly to the distribution network of N.V. EBS, with the necessary facilities.
